The Grizzly Bear is the subject of many
Northwest Coast Indian superstitions and legends. He was thought to possess many human
qualities and great power. This design illustrates a legend about a woman who was abducted
by a grizzly bear while she was picking berries. She married the bear and gave birth to
twin bear cubs. The overall design represents the grizzly bear. Within his body, the wife
is portrayed by her head and hands, and the bear cubs by their heads, legs, and paws.
