In this beautiful volume, two famous artist-scholars share their insights into the magnificent art of the Indians of the Northwest Coast. More than one hundred museum-quality examples of this art are represented in this book, ranging from functional objects such as ladles and baskets to richly decorated chests, Chilkat blankets, dance rattles, daggers, and ceremonial masks. The authors spent several days together, examining the pieces and talking about them. Their conversations, recorded and transcribed, result in an informal, lively discussion that illuminates the underlying concepts of the artworks and helps the reader to appreciate the creative genius and technical virtuosity of the traditional artists who created this work.
